Road bike Tours on Lanzarote

Lanzarote has excellent conditions for road cycling: Smooth tarmac roads, low traffic density, topography up to 600 m with enough flat and steep bits for aerobic endurance and strength training, mild climate that allows year round swimming in the Atlantic.
The best time to visit is from September to May. From June to August, the trade winds keep the temperatures within limits. Only on a few days then, the wind is too strong for cycling on the road.

Tour suggestions

Each tour is planned in such a way that, possibly, the different sections of a route should not be taken twice in the same trip.

The tours 1 to 5 are listed from south to north. Distance and elevation difference can be varied by means of alternative route segments.

Tour 1: El Golfo and Femes

Puerto del Carmen – Conil – Yaiza – El Golfo – Playa Blanca – Femes – Puerto del Carmen
Distance: 64 kmElevation difference: 1100 m
On this tour you will drive through the south of the island. Starting in Puerto del Carmen, the route will lead you first from the coast, on a well-asphalted track with little traffic across the fields, to the wine region of La Geria at an altitude of 350 m and continue towards the other side of the island heading for the volcanic crater of El Golfo. It goes along the cliffs on the old road LZ-701 (in any case, never use the new busy road) to Playa Blanca and up to Femes. Anyone there who has overcome the over 20% slope, will be then almost back in Puerto del Carmen. Due to the steep climbs, this tour is particularly suitable for endurance training.

Tour 2: Tour around Timanfaya

Puerto del Carmen – Yaiza – Timanfaya – Mancha Blanca – La Vegueta – La Geria – (El Golfo) – Puerto del Carmen
Distance: between 60 and 110 kmElevation difference: between 600 and 1250 m
The start of this tour can take place also in Playa Blanca or in Janubio. In this way one is already warmed up for overcoming the first 250 m elevation difference from Yaiza up to the National Park. Before nine o’clock, the road is virtually traffic free. In
Mancha Blanca, you have to decide, after having passed through the lava field, whether you will head for La Santa and Famara at sea level and then climb again up to Teguise oder whether you will remain at about 250 m altitude riding directlich back through La Vegueta and La Geria. Those who would like to include some addicional kilometres can continue travelling via El Golfo. Starting from Puerto del Carmen with the involvement of the two variants Famara and El Golfo. If you start from Puerto del Carmen and choose the two variants Famara and El Golfo, the total distance of the tour will be about the first half of the Ironman route.

Tour 3: El Jable

Puerto del Carmen – Arrecife – Costa Teguise – Teguise – Famara – Tinajo – Puerto del Carmen
Distance: 95 kmElevation difference: 900 m
The tour leads you through the central part of the island. For warming up you will ride
12 km on the cycle way along the beach promenade hasta Arrecife and then to Costa Teguise with some traffic. From there, there are about 10 km hasta Teguise on the foothills of the Famara massif, and the elevation difference is about 350 m. Afterwards, the travel will continue around the sandy zone El Jable, which also forms part of the centre of the island. Incidentally, we would like to mention that the sand of the several kilometres long beaches of Puerto del Carmen originates locally and not from the Sahara. The return route takes you through the Nature Park of the Volcanoes, La Geria and back to Puerto del Carmen.

Tour 4: Northern route (flat)

Puerto del Carmen – Arrecife – Costa Teguise – Orzola and zurück bzw.Tahiche – Nazaret – La Geria – Puerto del Carmen
Distance: between 80 and 100 kmElevation difference: between 370 and 620 m
Who wants to exercise his basic endurance and make just kilometres, can cycle, without major climbs, from Puerto del Carmen to Orzola via Costa Teguise relatively close to the eastern shore. We recommend to take the old road between Tahice and Arrieta. The asphalt is no perfect, but less motor vehicles are going there. To keep the elevation difference as low as possible, take the same road to return from Orzola to Puerto del Carmen. Those who can handle an additional elevation difference of 250 m go back over Teguise and through the vineyards of La Geria.

Tour 5: Northern Route with slope

Puerto del Carmen – Tias – San Bartolome – Tahiche – Teguise – Haria – Mirador del Rio – Tahiche – Puerto del Carmen
Distance: 105 kmElevation difference: 1560 m
In contrast to the Tour 4, the way to the north goes through the Famara mountains up to the highest point of the island at 600 m. If you want to include in the tour additional elevation metres, take, before reaching Haría, the road to Arrieta downwards through the quiet valley of Tabayesco. From Arrieta , the route takes you over Maguez to Mirador del Rio und Orzola. You will head back from Orzola to Puerto del Carmen as indicated for Tour 4.

Tour 6: Ironman route

Puerto del Carmen – Yaiza – El Golfo – Timanfaya – La Santa – Teguise – Haria – Mirador del Rio – Tahiche – Teguise – La Geria – Puerto del Carmen
Distance: 180 kmElevation difference: 2550 m
If you want to cover the ironman route distributing the distance over two days, we recommend you, on the first day, coming from Famara, not to go to Teguise but, 2 km before, to turn right at the roundabout and return to Puerto del Carmen over La Geria. On the second day, you will cycle along the Atlantic shore to Costa Teguise and then continue up to Teguise. On the way back you will have again the road stretch Tahiche – Teguise.

Tour 7: Ocean & Lava Triathlon Route

Distance: 90 kmElevation difference: 1350 m
The route of the Ocean & Lava Triathlon goes for most part through the huge lava field of the Timanfaya National Park. Moreover, the over 20% slope in Femes is the most violent ascent on the island.

Tour 8: Fuerteventura

With a 10 – 14 days holiday, you can take in consideration a trip to the neighbouring island Fuerteventura, which is only 40 minutes by ferry from Playa Blanca. It is possible, from Corralejo, to organise tours with distances betwen 20 and 220 km.
